Relationships: Starting Out

A few things have to happen before we make a relationship official, and even “official” can mean different things to different people. One of those things is establishing interest, and what that looks like can also vary from person to person. Check out our info page I Think I Like You: Getting to Know Someone to learn more.

Flirting

Flirting is what we do to show someone that we’re interested in them. Again what that looks like totally depends on you and your communication style. Check out our info page on Flirting Fundamentals to learn more. One thing our factsheets and posts won’t do is tell you strategies on how to “pull” someone. There’s a whole industry of self-help books, influencers, and life coaches offering in-person workshops all promising tips and tricks to get someone to like you (usually meaning getting people to have sex with you). These strategies often rely on manipulation tactics and encourage you to view people as sex objects rather than complex individuals with feelings like yourself, and that’s definitely not what we’re going for here.

Let’s break it down:

Not sure what your style of flirting might be? Unsure of what we might even mean by “style of flirting”? We’ve got a three part blog series where we talk more about what flirting is, what flirting isn’t, and things to think about when you give it a try:

Sometimes flirting is a one-sided thing, maybe someone’s trying a little too hard or you’re just not into them like that. We’ve got an info page for that too: I’m Just Not That Into You, it’ll tell you how to let someone down easy and how to recognize when they’re going too far.
